Core Aeration

Core aeration is a lawn care practice where small, 2-3 inch plugs of soil are mechanically removed from the lawn, creating openings for better air, water, and nutrient penetration. This process helps relieve soil compaction, reduce thatch buildup, and promote deeper root growth.

Key Aspects of Core Aeration

  • Mechanical Removal: A specialized machine, often called a core aerator, is used to extract soil plugs.
  • Soil Plugs: These plugs are typically 2-3 inches deep and are left on the lawn surface to decompose.
  • Benefits: Core aeration addresses soil compaction, reduces thatch, and encourages deeper, healthier root systems.
  • Improved Nutrient and Water Uptake: By creating pathways for air, water, and nutrients, core aeration enhances the lawn's ability to absorb these essential elements.
  • Reduced Thatch: Thatch, a layer of dead grass and debris, can inhibit grass growth. Core aeration helps break down thatch and improve its decomposition.
  • Timing: For cool-season grasses, late summer or early fall is generally the best time for aeration, allowing the grass to recover before winter. For warm-season grasses, late spring or early summer is preferable.
  • Frequency: Most lawns benefit from annual aeration, but heavily compacted or clay soils may require more frequent treatments.
